EYE FOR AN EYE: UNKLE

2002
Director Shynola and Ruth Lingford
Producer Paul Fennelly
Production Co. Oil Factory (UK)
Co-Designer Robert Del Naja

Eye For An Eye http://netilium.org/~mad/unkle_eyeforaneye_long-w8-250.wmv
Appropriating Fantasia music to set the stage for this devestating war allergory, Shynola invents a berry-rich Eden populated by a doughy, peace-loving race. Thundering UNKLE beats usher in the air dropped arrival of a grossly distended mother of all wars, from the teats of which the gentle natives copulatory suck. The beast reveals its perfidious nature, the innocents are undone and the war machine rumbles on.

Animators Shynola have developed a short film for UNKLE. Incorporating track Eye For An Eye with music from the film Fantasia The Project is the initiative of UNKLE's James Lavelle. "First and foremost it was intended as an anti-war statement, " comments David Durrell of Durrell Management, which handles Lavelle's musical output. "The idea is to release this as a film, rather than a promo. It's not about selling millions of records - it's about making a statement." The Film incororates painting by Massive Attack's 3D and was made in collaboration with animator Ruth Lingford. It protrays a blissful utopia that is destroyed by the invasion of a seemingly beautiful, but actually quite evil mother character. Comments Shynola's Richard Kenworthy: "A couple of months into making the film, 11 September happened and the project became really relevent." There are plans to show the film at animation festivals and, possibly, release it on DVD. Jason from Shyola says "It may be released as an anti war statement, although it was never intended to be one (sept11 happened during production). It could be taken to be anti war, but it's really just about aggression.....if anything. We never set out to make 'statements', we just do things that we think might be interesting to us and others (as wanky as that sounds)." (Creative Magazine)

Antistar Lyric

Lyric > ROBERT (3D) DEL NAJA & TOM HINGSTON
Twelve leading creatives from the fields of fashion, music and image-making have come together to produce eight distinct projects under the mantle of 'Lyric', an umbrella project that pioneers creative ground using the latest 'third generation' mobile-imaging technologies. Each contributor, or creative pairing was issued with a 'Motorola' handset with video call facility on '3's video mobile network, and asked to make a series of short films or 'motion clips' that visually interpret the song lyrics of their choice - producing one clip for each lyric line.
The contributors have produced a clip for each lyric line, and each lyric and clip is released one by one over a month-long period, gradually revealing the visual interpretations of each maker in numerous audacious, provocative outcomes On completion, each song sequence imparts a sense of the personality of the practitioners.
The project is among the first to initiate the creative use of the latest video mobile technology, and this has been enabled by the support of 3 and Motorola in partnership with SHOWstudio
