Massive Attack Return With a New Album for 03
Just when it looked like when celebrity obsessions and endless Popstars juggernauts were going to endlessly monopolise the cultural landscape, Massive Attack have appeared on the horizon to show us the way once more. Massive return with their new album '100th Window', their 4th album spanning 12 years of seminal influence on February 10th 2003 and will also be embarking on a world tour in support of the new release. The first single to be lifted from the new album will be 'Special Cases' out 2 weeks later on February 24th 2003. The single features the incomparable voice of Sinead O'Connor and is dark, soul-dusted and drenched with strings.
100th Window, is Massive Attack’s fourth album. Written and recorded at the band’s Bristol studio over the last year and represents a giant step into warm glitchy electronica, psychedelic landscapes, Arabic strings and deep depth-charged dub reggae of old. Robert Del Naja - better known as 3D - explains: ‘We wanted to make this album warmer than Mezzanine, but we didn’t want to make it softer. We wanted to keep the edge and the intrigue, but without making it bleak.’ The album was written and produced by 3D and Mezzanine co-producer Neil Davidge, while Massive Attack’s other member Grant ‘Daddy Gee’ Marshal took time out from the studio. ‘Grant has taken a bit of a holiday, a sabbatical, because he’s had a child, and he’s been starting a new life,’ says 3D. ‘He’ll get back into the swing of the music again when he comes on tour with us. He’ll be back.’ Massive Attack’s long time collaborator, Horace Andy, appears on the edgy, echo chamber lament "Everywhen" and the unsettling, melancholy "Name Taken" and Sinead O’Connor adds her raw spirit and emotion to three tracks, the seductive "What Your Soul Sings", the dub heavy, emotive "A Prayer For England" and the single , "Special Cases".
Massive Attack will embark on a worldwide tour in 03 , which will feature giant, interactive LED screens and stunning visuals.
Robert Del Naja said "When we started we always tried to create an environment around the soundsystem and create a place we wanted to perform in. Now we want to get that back again. It’ll be interactive and experimental".

10th December 2002

Massive Attack stunned an invited music industry audience into silence at a preview of their new album, '100th Window' in London last night. After listening to the full 75 minutes of the new album, at Channel Four Film's Soho studio, the last track 'Antistar' cut abruptly to a halt, leaving the room in suspended silence for several minutes before the audience broke into applause. Despite the departure of Mushroom, the album displays all the expected attention to production detail and features three contributions from Sinead O'Connor, most notably a hard-edged update of 'Safe From Harm' called 'A Prayer For England'. Amidst an enthusiastic reception, music critics and DJs last night questioned whether the dark mood would fit comfortably in a world that is facing crisis and whether the meticulous production contrasted too heavily with the current vogue for rough production techniques. But it's thought the new album - the band's first in five years - will be a treat for fans, sounding more like an up-dated 'Blue Lines' than either 'Protection' or 'Mezzanine'.

Craig Armstrong has scored the upcoming movie, The Quiet American, which is released November 29th 2002. From the classic novel by Graham Greene comes a murder mystery centered on a love triangle set against the French Indochina War in Vietnam, circa 1952. It's the true story of a veteran English journalist (Michael Caine), a young American (Brendan Fraser) and the beautiful Vietnamese woman caught between them. This is a world where nothing is what it seems--suffused with opium, intrigue and betrayal.
He's also provided the soundtrack to a film called "The Magdalene Sisters", which is due for release this week. For over 150 years, the Magdalene Laundries existed to punish young women who had fallen foul of Ireland’s strict adherence to Catholic doctrine. Generations of women were hidden from society and deprived of their freedom because they had become pregnant out of wedlock, because a parish priest decreed they were ‘in moral danger’, or just because they were poor. With nuns acting as virtual jailers, the girls were cut off from their families and endured slave labour conditions, brutalized and bullied in an institution sanctioned by Church and Government. Many spent their lives there, to be buried in unmarked graves. The last laundry closed as recently as 1996, and only since has the true horror of conditions in these institutions started to emerge. Set in the 1960s The Magdalene Sisters dramatizes the lives of three women sent to a Magdalene Laundry as punishment for their ‘sins’. With exceptional performances throughout, it is an indictment of a system that put religious dogma before the rights of its children. Mullan skilfully manages to avoid preaching or handwringing, and the real strength of the film is that he manages to deliver a powerful statement with such admirable restraint.
As yet, there is not any CD release information is avaliable.

EYE FOR AN EYE: UNKLE
UK | 6:20 | 2002
DIRECTOR: Shynola and Ruth Lingford
PRODUCER: Paul Fennelly
PRODUCTION CO.: Oil Factory (UK)
CO-DESIGNER: Robert Del Naja
Appropriating Fantasia music to set the stage for this devastating war allegory, Shynola invents a berry-rich Eden populated by a doughy, peace-loving race. Thundering UNKLE beats usher in the airdropped arrival of a grossly distended mother of all wars, from the teats of which the gentle natives take copulatory suck. The beast reveals its perfidious nature, the innocents are undone and the war machine rumbles on.

SNEAKERS CORNER:
Pro-Keds sneakers are about as iconic as a sports
shoe can be. Launched in 1949, they were beloved of Elvis and James Dean and latterly have been embraced by the hip-hop generation as the old-skool must-haves when it comes to well-dressed feet. It's a point that hasn't been lost on Bristol street style emporium Alterior, who this issue launch a major exhibition based on the world-famous sneaker. Pro Art is the work of six Bristol graff artists such as Will Barras, Dicy, Mr. Jago and Sickboy, all of whom boast an international reputation. All have also been invited to submit canvases based on the shoe: where the picture goes from there is up to them. To launch the night is a full-on party at Level with a mouth-watering DJ roster headed up by Massive's Daddy G and Portishead's Geoff Barrow who, between them, helped establish Bristol as a major musical force. All the artists involved in the exhibition will be in attendance, with more than a few promising to swap paint for displays of wax spinning. Sounds like a call to put on those dancing shoes. The Pro Art launch is at I^evel, Bristol on Fri 11 Oct. See Clubs section for more details. The Pro Art show runs at Alterior, Park Street, Bristol from Oct 11 for the following six weeks.

BLUR and MASSIVE ATTACK have hit out at OASIS - branding as "absolutely ridiculous" NOEL GALLAGHER's claims that their anti-war efforts are useless.
NME.COM met up with Damon Albarn and Robert '3-D' Del Naja at Olympic Studios last week, where Massive Attack are preparing for this weekend's demonstration in London (September 28).
In a recent NME interview, Oasis ' songwriter Noel Gallagher said: "I don't understand all these pop stars saying 'We should have a democratic debate about the war'...my opinion means nothing. The people in the White House can change this, I play guitar in a band and we're really good. Arsed about anything else." His brother Liam added: "Nobody's gonna listen to knob'ead out of Blur... no-one even listens to Bono."
His comments are in reference to 3-D and Damon's adverts in recent issues of NME, calling for no UK involvement in any prospective war in Iraq.
In an exclusive interview 3-D hit back. "The idea is as an individual you say something, make a statement and other people who are like minded join you," he told NME. "Eventually you create a force. Otherwise, how do you do it? It always starts with one person. That's how any political party starts, how any trade union starts, any force of protest starts, always with single voices. And to suggest that as musicians we shouldn't have a view is absolutely ridiculous because as musicians we're still British subjects who live within this country."
Damon Albarn added: "We live within this country so therefore as citizens our responsibility if we believe strongly in something is to express that view. If I didn't have such an appalling history with Noel Gallagher I'd say what I think about what he said, but it just perpetuates something which just negates from what we're actually trying to do."
There is a rally for the Stop The War coalition this Saturday (28 September) in London it assembles at 12.30pm at Embankment to march to Hyde Park - www.stopwar.org.uk.

The anti-war poster designed and financed by DAMON ALBARN and ROBERT '3-D' DEL NAJA finally appears in this week's NME - amid accusations from the MASSIVE ATTACK star that bands are unwilling to speak out on the issue.
The double page advert, featured in the centre spread of this week's paper, is aimed at raising awareness of opposition to any British involvement in a US led attack on Iraq. Albarn and 3-D are working with CND and the 'Stop The War' coalition, who are organising a demonstration in London (September 28).
The advert quotes former Labour MP Tony Benn and former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark (1967-69), two people 3-D said "represent a balanced view of Britain and America".
However, he told NME.COM that he is frustrated with what he sees as a lack of support from his musical peers.
"A lot of people have stated interest but not followed it up," he said. "In terms of people getting back to the CND or Stop The War it's been very apathetic, it's very disappointing really."
3-D added that they aren't concerned about other bands' getting involved. "Damon and myself don't feel that's a problem," he added. "The reason we want to use the NME is because it's the only weekly music paper and we're musicians. It's the obvious place to for us to present our case and create a forum for debate. We're not that concerned that we've had to stick our necks out for it because we feel totally at ease with our views and opinions. But there has been a surprising amount of apathy from other bands. I've got to say it. "

NME: MASSIVE ATTACK plan to release two albums within a year - after spending four years on the follow-up to 'MEZZANINE'.
The group haven't released a new album since 1998, with founder Robert '3-D' Del Naja the only bandmember working full-time on the record.
He is now in a London studio working on the final stages of mixing on the currently untitled album.
Writing to fans on the Massive Attack website, he said that the band will tour in the new year, starting in the Far East, and that another "less precious" album will follow within 12 months.
He wrote: "The loops on this record are sampled from ourselves. At the start of 'Mezzanine' I looped up new wave stuff to get away from the soul reggae parts. This record, we feel, has more depth than 'Mez'.
"Will start recording new, less precious material to release one year from LP 4. Very soon. No pressure, more disposable. How refreshing."
3-D is now working on artwork for the album, which is set for release in the autumn or early next year.

U.S. intentionally destroyed Iraq's water system
When the U.S. military took on Saddam Hussein in 1991, American planes strategically obliterated Iraq's water system. Then, with the war over and the water system in ruins, the United States imposed sanctions barring the importation of water purification equipment. The combined effect of this one-two punch was the slow death of thousands of Iraqis – something not unexpected by the U.S. military.
Reporting for the Progressive magazine, Thomas J. Nagy unearthed the Defense Intelligence Agency documents detailing all of this. In fact, Nagy's scoop showcases, yet again, the laziness of mainstream media: the now declassified documents are online, at an official government Web site, www.gulflink.osd.mil.
Here's a sample from a January 1991 document titled, "Iraq Water Treatment Vulnerabilities": "Iraq depends on importing specialized equipment and some chemicals to purify its water supply, most of which is heavily mineralized and frequently brackish to saline. With no domestic sources of both water treatment replacement parts and some chemicals, Iraq will continue attempts to circumvent United Nations Sanctions to import these vital commodities. Failing to secure supplies will result in a shortage of pure drinking water for much of the population. This could lead to increased incidences, if not epidemics, of disease."
One commodity Iraq was banned from importing was chlorine, a chemical used for both chemical weapons and water sanitization. The Defense Department knew a shortage of chlorine would kill – and has kept the ban in place for the past decade. "Unless the water is purified with chlorine, epidemics of such diseases as cholera, hepatitis, and typhoid could occur," the brief noted.
Ten years on, the U.N. estimates 500,000 children have died as a result of the sanctions, and Hussein remains, for the moment anyway, in power.

2. New trade treaty seeks to privatize global social services
Water may well be the oil of the 21st century. A billion people are in need of potable water, and demand is growing by the second. Corporations, sensing that blue gold is the commodity of the future, are rushing to capitalize on this scarcity. They're eagerly buying up publicly owned water delivery systems, and of course, hiking rates and cutting costs.
When San Francisco-based construction giant Bechtel took over the municipal water service of Cochabamba, Bolivia, in 1999, the company promptly jacked up rates by 35 percent to guarantee a 16 percent return on its investment.
Bolivians gave Bechtel a big one-finger salute. By April 2000 – after riots, general strikes, several deaths, and almost no coverage in the U.S. press – they'd run the firm out of the country. Despite the media blackout, it was a huge victory for the working-class masses and a highly illustrative episode in the ongoing privatization of everything.
But as Maude Barlow reported in the Ecologist in February 2001, the Bolivians' success may not last. Enter the spawn of the World Trade Organization: the Global Agreement on Trade in Services. GATS, for those of you who haven't been perusing obscure writings on international finance, is a trade pact designed to speed up and lock in the corporate takeover of public infrastructure and services worldwide. GATS looks at taxpayer-funded services as an unfair business practice. In other words, the decision by Bolivian government officials to keep a foreign corporation from acquiring its water system could be seen as a barrier to free trade and international commerce.
While the exact terms of the deal are still being hashed out, U.S. trade representatives have a general idea of what kind of public services they'd like to privatize: water, health care, dental care, child care, elder care, education, museums, libraries, law, welfare, energy, environmental protection, insurance, transportation, mail delivery, and on and on ...
Though the pact will undoubtedly be watered down before it's ratified, expect it to contain some nasty privatization mandates. The next round of negotiations is set for December 2002.
Maude Barlow, the Ecologist

U.S. ANTI-WAR DELEGATION AT AREAS BOMBED BY U.S. WARPLANES by 3D (why?) on 29-Aug-02
*More Bombings in Iraq as U.S.-British Warplanes Hit Mosul and Suburb of Baghdad on Tuesday*
A U.S. anti-war delegation traveling through Iraq has visited areas that have been targeted by this week's U.S. bombing campaign. The delegation -- stationed at Baghdad's Al-Rasheed hotel until the end of the week -- was in Basra on Tuesday. Basra is Iraq's second largest city and suffered a major bomb attack on Sunday morning August 25th. Eight people died and many civilians were injured, some seriously. The U.S. delegation, which is led by Ramsey Clark, former U.S. attorney general will be inspecting Mosul airport in Northern Iraq tomorrow August 29. The airport and its radar tower that guides civilian air traffic were hit by U.S. missiles on August 27.
On behalf of the delegation, Ramsey Clark issued the following statement:
"We came to Basra to visit the hospitals and interview doctors and patients about the state of health care in Basra. We had planned to come to Basra because the region is suffering stunning cancer rates. This area in Iraq was the site of the greatest use of depleted uranium weapons by U.S. air force in the Gulf War eleven years ago."
"Two days before we arrived in Basra U.S. war planes struck again killing and wounding more than twenty people. We visited one of the wounded at the Basra Training Hospital and we interviewed workers in the area who saw and heard the gigantic explosion at approximately 11:00 am Sunday morning August 25. While we were in Basra, U.S. war planes carried out two more major bombing attacks against the airport in Mosul and against civil and service installations in Al-Nukhayb, located south of Baghdad. We will inspect the airport at Mosul tomorrow.
"People in the United States must recognize that the war against Iraq goes on every day as the Bush administration prepares for a major land and ground war. The economic sanctions are a central part of the decade-long war waged against Iraq by the United States. Bombing and sanctions constitute an integrated strategy designed to overthrow the government in Iraq and replace it with a proxy regime similar to what exists in Afghanistan. The U.S. government falsely declares that its campaign against Iraq is motivated by a concern over Iraq's potential possession of non-conventional weapons. The real goal is to dominate this strategic and oil-rich region and to destroy any government and people that desire to maintain their independence."
"We witnessed in Basra the care provided to the large number of adults and children who are suffering high rates of cancer. Certain childhood cancers, for instance, have increased by a huge factor in the last few years. While they can be treated by combination drug therapy protocols, Iraqi hospitals are unable to effectively import all of the medicines needed for the protocol. As a consequence, almost all the children with these cancers perish. It is the U.S. imposed sanctions that makes access to the full protocol impossible. Deliberately obstructing sick people's access to medicines that would keep them alive otherwise must be understood as murder."
"It is urgent that this country be allowed to trade, buy and sell all the products necessary to sustain and improve life. U.S. imposed sanctions have killed more than a million Iraqis. The near-daily bombing since 1998 has killed hundreds if not thousands of people. The U.S. government is guilty of violating the basic tenets of international law as a wages aggression against Iraq. We are urging all progressive people in the United States and elsewhere to take immediate action to end the criminal campaign against Iraq."

NME: RICHARD ASHCROFT has joined DAMON ALBARN, MASSIVE ATTACK's ROBERT '3-D' DEL NAJA and ELBOW's GUY GARVEY in supporting the CND-backed 'STOP THE WAR' campaign.
As reported in last week's NME, 'Stop The War' intends to foster and publicise opposition to any proposed British involvement in the intended US military effort aimed out driving out Saddam Hussein from Iraq. While not specifically signing up to the campaign, Ashcrofttold NME he empathised with the sentiments: "I think any war against Iraq at the moment is just not a legitimate war. We all know that, it goes without saying. It’s quite obvious and it’s quite scary.
"I think we all know what it’s about, we all know the reasons and we all know that God and oil are probably the two biggest causes of fucking war in the world and always have been for a long, long time. What can we do about it? What we can do is pray for peace and pray that the Americans don’t start a war."
Hundreds of NME.COM readers have also contacted us over the last few days following last week's story. One, Andrew Derho, wrote: "I’m chuffed to hear that (they) spoke their minds about the current situation regarding Iraq. It should be no secret that the US decries Saddam Hussein because he has something they want (oil), but overlooks it when their allies or puppet governments are guilty of the same things Iraq have done. I hope people open their eyes to reality and everyone can have a serious discussion about the real cost of war, and if it is justifiable."
Another believes self-interest in the Bush administration would be the root cause for any action. She wrote: "As a Muslim born and raised Canadian I, like the rest of the world, was appalled by the events of 9-11, but the more Bush talks about the 'Axis of Evil' and attacking Iraq the more it seems that its less about eradicating terrorism and more about keeping his popularity in his own country up."
However, not all are opposed to military action. One reader said he wanted to boycott the bands' records for speaking out, while another wrote: "Saddam Hussein would just as easy choose Britain to unleash a chemical or biological attack on its innocent people and not care about UK rockers and their opinions. This is not a regime we can sit down with, discuss our problems and find a solution. What should we do? Does anyone remember Neville Chamberlain? Our countries have always been there for each other through good and bad and what we do now is for the future of our children and grandchildren. Remember 9/11 is an act of war! Are you with us or with the terrorists? Our governments represent the best of the civilized world, we will not purposely murder innocent men, women and children! Can we say that of our adversaries?"
Chris Brudzinski wrote: "I lost a friend in the attack on the World Trade Center. I also knew people who died in the plane that crashed into the Pentagon. It's easy for people who weren't forever affected by what those bastards did to criticise the American government for all of its missteps in response to the terror attacks. I wonder where Damon would stand had some British landmark been attacked and he had lost friends or family?"
The Stop The War coalition supported by a CND demonstration starts on September 28 at 12.30pm at Embankment in London, ending in Hyde Park.

The recording for the forthcoming Massive Attack album is apparently going very well. D's in the middle of mixing and they'll be back in Bristol for three weeks after which they will be returning to Olympic to put everything down.
The release date is now scheduled for early February 2003.

'It's All Happening Now', the long awaited Lewis Parker album will be released mid-September through Melankolic and will be preceded by a single. The long delay had been caused by sample clearance problems.

Craig Armstrong will be following his successful Barbican appearance with two shows in Paris on the 15th and 17th September and another one in Brussels on the 18th September. Get your chequebook out Pee!

There are also plans to release some of the Nocturne sessions independently early next year.

A former founding member of influential trip-hop act Massive Attack has been jailed in connection with an attack on a friend.
The BBC reports that Claude Williams, 41, used a fork and his fists to beat up a former friend, John Hamer, over a debt worth the Canadian equivalent of about $44. Williams was sentenced to 18 months in jail.
Williams was a founding member of the dance act, which evolved in the early '90s out a group of DJs known as the Wild Bunch. After appearing on their album "Blue Lines," Williams left in 1998. He initially worked with the musician Tricky, but has since fallen on hard times, The BBC said.
Williams broke into Hamer's room at the Madeville House bail hostel -- where they were both residents -- and beat him as he slept, leaving bruises and cuts on his face, the report said. Williams wore the fork around his wrist as a bracelet.
The BBC said Williams will likely serve half of his 18 month sentence before being released.

UNKLE's JAMES LAVELLE has put together a short "anti-war" film that features paintings by MASSIVE ATTACK.
UNKLE's Lavelle has been working with the animation team Shynola to create the short film, which features a number of paintings by Massive Attack founder 3-D.
A spokesperson for UNKLE's Lavelle's management told Creative Review magazine: "First and foremost it was intended as an anti-war statement. The idea is to release this as a film, rather than a promo. It's not about selling millions of records - it's about making a statement."
The clip is set to be shown at animation festivals across the world. (source: NME)

Corner shop have dissed Massive Attack. Here is an excerpt from an interview on Dotmusic, where they lash out:
How come the Rocky films inspired you to such an extent?
Tjinder: "It's in a humorous way. Also, to take any pointers from Rocky is to turn things on their head. Normally you take pointers from some sort of holy book or whatever. It was quite humorous that it would be so throwaway. Having said that, it's quite an iconic thing.
"It's not got that much to do with the seventies, but it's a series of films that people will remember and can relate to. An extension of that, is to take pointers from Rocky, within the record industry, which is the mainstay of the song. It's against the industry and against pathetic A&R men who are an intermediary between us getting good music and crap music like Massive Attack."

Massive Attack have selected the final tracks for their forthcoming studio album, dotmusic has learnt. Robert Del Naja told the group's official website that they had now chosen the final 12 tracks from a possible 850 in an attempt to finish off the album.
He said: "We don't have a running order as such but we've got a few tracks which we think are going to work together."
The forthcoming album, said to feature vocals from Sinead O'Connor, Damon Albarn and Horace Andy, will be the duo's first new material since 1998's 'Mezzanine'.
Speaking of a new, as-yet-untitled track, Del Naja explained: "It started off being about religion and martyrdom but, at the same time it was also about total admiration for a friend or a loved one; the whole thing where you give yourself to someone."
"It's got a quite mystical, Eastern feel. It moves on from what we did with 'Inertia Creeps'. There's more string arrangements, which we're going to do with Craig (Armstrong)."
The album, the group's fourth studio LP, is due to be released this summer.
Meanwhile, Massive Attack yesterday released their 'Eleven Promos' DVD in the US. The DVD features videos including 'Daydreaming', 'Unfinished Sympathy', 'Safe From Harm', 'Protection', 'Teardrop' and 'Inertia Creeps', with the band donating all royalties to the Red Cross.

Further to the news, that MASSIVE ATTACK are to make their collaboration with rapper MOS DEF available as a download, I can confirm that it will appear on the soundtrack to Blade 2.

The band will make the song available as a download from the Massive website. From March 11th fans can listen to the track for free or register to download it.
Speaking previously to NME.COM, group member Robert '3-D' Del Naja said "It's a good track, it's called 'I Against I'. He (Mos Def) did the lyrics and we completely reconstructed the track, took the lyrics off and started again in our usual fashion. Everyone really likes it."

Craig Armstrong's talents definitely haven't gone unnoticed as he's been nominated for two more awards in 2002. Firstly the American Film Institute has nomianted Armstrong as 'Composer Of The Year' for his work on last year's blockbuster movie Moulin Rouge. He's also received a Golden Globe nomination for the Moulin Rouge Soundtrack. Craig has been awarded many times for his vision and sheer brilliance, so fingers crossed for more silverware!

Craig will releas 'As If To Nothing', on Melankolic, in February. The eagerly awaited release features a number of collaborations including one with Bono and the Edge who have recorded an acoustic version of 'Stay (Far Away, So Close). Craig had previously arranged the strings for U2s soundtrack work on the Batman film. Other guest vocalists on 'As If To Nothing' include Evan Dando, who recorded a track entitled 'Wake Up In New York'. David McAlmont contributed vocals on 'Snow' and Antye, from the German band Laub, added her talents to the song 'Waltz'.

To celebrate the release of his second album, Craig will be performing a one-off show at The Barbican on April 7th 2002.

Armstrong's latest score is from the film 'Kiss Of The Dragon' starring Jet Li and Bridget Fonda.

The long awaited new album from MASSIVE ATTACK is going through yet another "transitional period", group member 3-D has told NME. Speaking to NME.COM last year, Robert '3-D' Del Naja said that the group hoped to be mixing the record by the start of 2002. However, speaking in the new issue of NME, the vocalist said they still have "about 20 versions" of each track they want to feature on the follow-up to '98s 'Mezzanine', leaving the group "scratching our heads". He said: "(The album) is basically going through another transitional period. We've got about 20 versions of each track on the album and all of them have got something great about them but none of them would work together, so we're sitting there scratching our heads. " 3-D said the as-yet-untitled record, due for release in autumn, has been through "three or four" such transitions, and is currently "quite mystical, quite trippy, more psychedelic" than their previous three efforts.
